Lunch & Literacy

Literacy Hostesses: Sue Messaglia and Michelle Esposito-Koler

Menu

Appetizers:  Bell ringers and simple five minute activities that are teacher facilitated.

QCQs: Quick Comprehension Questions.  As students walk in they can read a quick excerpt (two to three sentences – usually a quote, verse, short poem, etc.), and answer two questions.  QCQs can also be used with DGRs – see desserts.

DVCs:  Daily Vocabulary Checks.  Students will get one or two words as they enter class to do a quick vocabulary check, which can include defining, student definition, sentence, etc.  However, students will follow up with this activity by pairing up with another student (Think Pair Share), and sharing their information.

TPS:  Think Pair Share from the CRISS strategies is a wonderful activity to get students thinking about a particular subject.  This appetizer can be used throughout the daily lesson.

Soups:  Activities that can be combined with salads and sandwiches.  The soup can also be served alone, but it works better if paired with a salad or sandwich.  Please note soup must be served first.  Soups should only take about 5 minutes to compl”eat”e – ten at the most.

ABC (Brainstorming) Soup:  This activity can be done in column formation or on a chart that looks like a game board with all squares.  Each square contains a letter of the alphabet.  Students are asked to write down one idea that deals with the selected topic which begins with that letter.  If done in column form, students write down each letter in one column and the coinciding “letter” idea in the adjoining column.  This activity is derived from CRISS as well.

A Bowl of Anticipation (Guides):  Using another CRISS strategy, anticipation guides can be a great way to begin your lesson.  Anticipation guides should not be too lengthy and have enough ingredients to spark your guests’ attention.   Anticipation Guides can also be used as an appetizer as well.

Word Attack Soup (aka: CRISS strategy – Survival Word Attack Skills):  This activity is part of another CRISS strategy.  In this soup, there are several words surrounded by other words.  The key to this strategy is using the surrounding words to understand the context (meaning) of the vocabulary word.

Salads: Activities that can stand alone or be paired with other parts of the menu.  Some salads are larger than others and may require two or more people to complete (eat).  The house salad is small and should not be served alone.  These can take up to ten minutes to complete.

Socrates’s Salad:  Otherwise known as the Socratic Seminar, this strategy contains two groups – the inside and outside circles.  The inside circle leads the topic/discussion, and the outside circle observes and takes notes.  The key to this strategy is the outside circle cannot talk or participate.  They must stay absolutely quiet and observe.  The inside circle does all the talking; however, they must stay on topic.

QAR Salad:  Great salad to have before the QtA sandwich.  This is a CRISS strategy that students/teachers can use when understanding the relationship between questions and answers.

Sandwiches:  The main course; comes with extras that can be used for practice at home or if you finish the main course sooner than others, you always have those “extras” to finish up.

The RAFT:  Another famous CRISS strategy, this strategy is an excellent tool for writing.  This strategy uses the concepts of Role, Audience, Format, and Topic to assist students with the writing process.  Role answers the question: who are you as a writer (soldier, comedian, mom, teacher, etc).  Audience answers the question: who you are writing for.  Format has to do with what form – letter, speech, conversation, article, etc.- are you writing in.  Lastly, topic is what you are writing about.

Double Decker Special (aka: CRISS strategy -Double-Entry Reflective Journal):  As stated in Project CRISS, 4th Edition, “Double-Entry Reflective Journals help students become more aware of their thinking while reading,” (174).    In this strategy students create two columns (combo deal here: Two Column Notes).  On the left  column, readers write down information from the reading and then use the other column to write down their thoughts.

The Webwich: This activity uses “webs” for discussion purposes.  Students will work on a teacher designated web and complete it to use in TPS activities or large group activities.

Monthly Specials:

Create your own menu item and present it to the hostesses!  Winners will receive a Lunch with Literacy Award and a photo op. with your Literacy Hostesses.   Specials will also be placed on the menu.

Desserts:  A delicious way to end your dining experience with the Literacy Hostesses.  Desserts are a quick palette cleansing that will give you a feeling of fullness and success.

DGRs:  Daily Quick Reads.  These can be anything that is minimal in reading – a quote, comic, political cartoon, poem, etc.  However, it must be selectively chosen to go with the main course.

I Read, You Read, We all Read for Life:  DEAR, SSR, various independent reading activities that give students the opportunity to become lifelong readers and enjoy reading.  Visits to libraries can be made during this time.  This will give students the opportunity to check out a good book.  Please note, library visits should be a maximum of ten minutes door to door.

Beverages (and Books)

BYOB: Bring your own book to read and share at lunch.
